Make a 3D Heart out of old newspaper - February 2010

Here's a list of FREE kid Art and Recycle craft project, to help promote creativity and imagination with these arts and craft project and arts craft idea made from simple recycled materials. This month February 2010 make a 3D Heart out of newspaper (paper mache).

Project of the Month (February)

Make paper Mache 3D heart

You will Need:
1)  One Heart shape balloon.
2)  Acrylic paint, color of your choice.
3)  Old newspaper torn into strips.
4)  Paper Mache paste or Tapioca Flour Paste*
5)  Penknife and glue.
Step 1:
  • *If you do not have the paper mache paste, you can easily make some with some tapioca flour. Take some tapioca flour, slowly add hot water and mixing at the same time as you add the hot water slowly, stop when you see a gluey paste forming.
  • Tear old newspaper into strips.
  • Inflate a heart shape balloon (tie up the end).
  • Start dipping the strips of old news paper  (soaked thoroughly) and pasting them one by one onto the balloon's surface, overlapping each other in someway or other (make sure to cover all surfaces and spread the paste soaked paper strips evenly with your fingers (sort of like smoothing the surface of a clay figure).
  • Let the first layer dry off and start repeating the step of adding paper strips.
  • I usually do three layers but if you want a firmer finished piece, feel free to add more layers.
  • After the piece is totally dried, use a pen knife and cut one round right in the center of the heart as shown by the red dotted line, remove the balloon. (so that you get two side of heart shape)
  • You can either use both as heart shape bowls or glue them back together to form a 3D heart.
  • After you have decided which one you want to make and you can start painting.
For the bowl you need to paint both inside and outside.
For making a 3D heart, use the glue to stick the two pieces back together, add one more layer of newspaper strips, let dry and paint the outside of the heart.
  • Let the paint dry and you have your 3D heart!
